July 30 - Watercolor Rocks Workshop

Saturday, July 30

1:00 - 3:00 PM PST

Join Sophie Tivona for an afternoon of painting rocks! Do you have a collection of rocks lovingly gleaned from your adventures? We will use these treasures as the subjects of careful study in this workshop. Please bring 3-5 rocks to class; the rocks should be smallish - we will be painting on a 6" x 8" paper so around 3" or smaller is a good size.  When choosing your rocks for study please avoid crystals, coral, translucent or glittery specimens. Keep in mind your skill level when choosing your subjects - simple, smooth rocks are great! The more nooks and crannies and complexity your rocks have will determine the difficulty of your painting.  :)

Some watercolor knowledge is preferred - we will briefly discuss painting basics but mostly focus on techniques of representation.

Supplies will be provided but if you have a collection of watercolors at home please bring them - the more colors you have at your fingertips, the better!

You will leave class with a painting of your rocks as well as a custom supply kit.

Supplies: You will receive a complete class kit to take home, including:

  • 6" x 8" watercolor block with 20 sheets of paper
  • a custom palette made by Sophie with high-end pigments
  • a size 4 round brush

Adults and teens of all levels welcome! It held indoors masks are required to protect our immunocompromised community members. Let's look out for one another.

About the teacher:
Sophie Tivona is an illustrator and watercolor painter living in Oakland, CA.

"I wandering in gardens around the Bay Area and dreaming of flowers, rocks, soil and water.  I was raised by my single mother who has been a professional gardener for my whole life.  I've always loved to create paper products and I would find quiet spaces in the yard to make little treasures.  I have followed a meandering path to find my way to a career in illustration and I'm overjoyed to share my love of nature through painting.  Watercolor is my muse and I love its unpredictable, unforgiving qualities;  it is my daily joy to harness the wildness of the medium and reveal its delicacy and strength."
